How to Find Your Social Media Voice

One of the most important marketing elements of your brand is your voice. Especially your social media voice. Getting clear on your social media voice and referencing it every time you sit down to write a blog post or social media post will help your brand stand out in the crowd.

If all of your social media posts were suddenly published without your handle or profile picture next to them, would your followers instantly know that post was yours by the way it was written?

Your voice is one of the most important pieces of your branding. Your followers will come back to you because they like you as a person. They will make your recipes because they like the way you talk about cooking, the stories you weave around your recipes. They will read stories about your life because they love the humor or seriousness of your voice.

The single most important thing about your voice is that it needs to be YOUR VOICE. Don’t try and be something you aren’t. It’s tempting to try and sound like all those brands you idolize or think are crushing it. That voice is taken. Just be you. You will win them over. You are perfect just as you are.

Having a distinct voice will help your audience differentiate you from your competitors.

Define Your Voice Keywords

Make a list of the words you would use to describe yourself. Are you serious? Silly? Somewhere in between? Try to get specific. Need help? Ask a friend! The thing with voice is that you need to be  you. Don’t try and be something you aren’t. If I tried to be a sweet gal from the south instead of a cursing-wine-guzzling-opinionated-ass from SoCal it wouldn’t work. When thinking about your voice, ask yourself who you authentically are.

Define Your Brand’s Purpose

Why do you do what you do? Are you providing a service for new moms or are an artist selling your work? The reasons why we all get up in the morning and work hard each day are all valid but very different, and very personal. Know your purpose every time you sit down to craft a post. It will set the tone for how you speak to your followers.

Know Who Your Ideal Follower Is

You should always have a clear picture of your ideal customer/follower in your mind so that you can better communicate (and yes, ideally sell) to them. This includes demographic information like age, sex, location, etc. If you listen to them, you will have a clear understanding of how you should speak to them. Do your research.

Relate To Your Followers

Figure out where you overlap with your ideal customers. This is going to show you how you can relate with your customers. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Relating with your audience will help you create likability and trust. An easy example might be if you’re a mom and your ideal customer is also a mom. Off the bat, you’ll have tons to relate to (being busy, competing priorities, short on time, etc…)

Mimic the Language Your Ideal Follower Uses

This is a big one! How we communicate with our audience is an incredibly important part of marketing, if not most of it. Pay attention to the language, words and phrases your audience is using and make sure to incorporate it into your social media posts and blogs. We bond through communication and this will help you relate with your audience.

Bonus tip: Don’t forget to use your brands hashtags so at very first glance, your audience knows your posts are yours!

Bonus tip #2: Don’t forget to stay human and this means adapting to your audience and engaging with them. So respond to comments on social media – even when they’re not positive! Some of the most meaningful moments you can have with potential customers is when you’re helping them work through an issue.

Remember that at the end of the day, your social media voice is you! No need to overcomplicate it. Your voice is all just one piece of your overall branding puzzle.
