Grilled asparagus is one of the easiest and most delicious vegetables to grill! The smoky flavor of the grill combined with the parmesan and lemon makes for the most perfectly flavored, and healthy, summer side dish.
Grilled asparagus is the easiest summer BBQ side dish recipe. It’s healthy, tastes delicious and it’s a little bit fancy when you serve it up all pretty. The ingredients are simple, olive oil, salt, pepper, lemon and parmesan.
How to Grill Asparagus
Cooking asparagus on the grill keeps the stalks crispy and not mushy and stringy. The key is to not overcook them.
The first thing you want to do is soak the asparagus so the tips don’t overcook when you grill them.
Next you drain the asparagus and evenly coat with olive oil, salt and pepper.
When it’s time to take whatever meat you are grilling off to let them sit for five-ish minutes, throw the asparagus on. They cook for about 5 – 7 minutes.
The final step is topping the asparagus with a squeeze of lemon and some freshly grated parmesan cheese.
What to Serve with Grilled Asparagus
I have been feeding a lot of men and boys for years in my house. Dinners always consist of a protein, a vegetable and some sort of filling carb.
Some of our most favorite filling carbs are potatoes! I love to serve the asparagus with steak or chicken and then a side of Smashed Rosemary Potatoes, Garlic Roasted Potato Wedges and when I’m feeling like a good guilty pleasure side dish, I LOVE to make Tater Tot and Bacon Casserole.
Not feeling the potato vibe I’m putting down? Grilled Corn on the Cob is always a great carb in the summer!

Grilled Asparagus Notes & Tips
- When cutting the bottoms off the asparagus, you want to cut all the area off that isn’t nice and green. If you don’t get that white-ish area off the asparagus will be tough and stringy. I always cut them about ½” above where the white turns to green.
- Soak the asparagus in water for at least 30 minutes before grilling.
- When asparagus is finished, it will still be bright green, slightly crispy and still firm. When you pick it up by the end with tongs, it shouldn’t fall over limp.
